Australia beat England by 221 runs to complete a series whitewash. The Cricketer takes a look at the performances of each player at the MCG...

AUSTRALIA

Travis Head (152): Heads into 2023 as the No.1 option to open the innings at the next World Cup in India. A career-best score added to his impressive form against England, regardless of the format. 9.5

David Warner (106): A 19th ODI century for the left-hander, against the backdrop of discussion over his leadership future. Happy to play second fiddle in a record-breaking stand. 9

Steve Smith (21): A setback after returning to his sublime best in the first two ODIs. A curious dismissal after Buttler's delayed appeal. 4

Marcus Stoinis (12 & DNB): A boundary-less 15-ball innings as Australia's pursuit of 400 faded. 4

Mitchell Marsh (30 & 1-18): Hit sixes off Curran and Stone to help Australia past 350 before taking the penultimate wicket in the chase. 6.5

Alex Carey (12*): A quiet series all told for the Adelaide Strikers man, who took two smart catches to dismiss Malan and Dawson. 5

Marnus Labuschagne (8* & DNB): A fifty and two single figures scores rounded off with another low-key outing after the openers had done the hard work. 5

Sean Abbott (DNB & 2-45): Came in for just his eighth ODI as Mitchell Starc dropped out. The most expensive of the Aussie bowling quintet but that mattered little as he got rid of Vince and Curran. 6.5

Pat Cummins (DNB & 2-25): Returned to the side and bowled just six overs, cramping England's batters for room. Smart catch to see off Billings after ball had been skied. 6.5

Adam Zampa (DNB & 4-31): Shadowed by the Shane Warne Stand, the legspinner cut through England's middle-order to pick up his second consecutive four-wicket haul. Was at one stage on a hat-trick thanks to a double wicket maiden. 8

Josh Hazlewood (DNB & 1-21): An economical seven overs from the New South Wales seamer which deserved to yield better than just the one wicket, that of Malan in the third over driving at a ball he shouldn't have. 6

ENGLAND

Jason Roy (33): A highest international score since July but this has not been the return to form the Surrey opener had hoped it would be. Probably goes to South Africa but place in under pressure. 6

Phil Salt (DNB): Suffered a concussion in the ninth over of Australia's innings and was replaced by Moeen Ali. N/A

Dawid Malan (2): Will leave Australia with a heavy heart after missing the T20 final, hitting a century in defeat in the first ODI and then losing form. 2

James Vince (22): Produced an innings from a different era, striking at 48.88 from 45 balls. With batters coming back, it might be some months before his next opportunity. 3

Sam Billings (7): Unable to repeat his knock from Sydney, when he looked to be taking England to victory. 3

Moeen Ali (DNB & 18): Would be hard to over-analyse his performance given he was a concussion substitute during the Australia innings. Another who soaked up deliveries before getting out cheaply. Was not eligible to bowl. 4

Jos Buttler (1): The captain never looked at the races and lasted just four deliveries in the chase. 3

Chris Woakes (0-62 & 0): Achieved some good early swing under cloudy skies but went unrewarded. Remains the first-choice new ball option alongside Jofra Archer. 5

Sam Curran (0-66 & 12): Perhaps understandably not at his best since his player of the tournament display at the T20 World Cup and is still trying to find his feet in this side. 5

Liam Dawson (1-75 & 18): Found a bit of help off the pitch but little in the way of genuine turn as he struggled to perform a holding role. Highlights how much England miss Adil Rashid when he is absent. 5

David Willey (0-63 & 12): Bar the six extras conceded, Willey was neat and tidy. One of the few to return home from this season with his head held high. 6.5

Olly Stone (4-85 & 4): Career-best figures but it was a curious route to them, given he was 0 for 65 through seven overs. Took advantage of Australia trying to go through the gears in the last 12 overs. Good to see him back. 7
