Jofra Archer, Tim David and a fine day two at the IPL auction for Mumbai Indians

Archer, who is highly unlikely to be able to play any part in the 2022 IPL season, was a late entry onto the auction list and his presence led to a bidding war between Mumbai, former team Rajasthan Royals and Sunrisers Hyderabad on Sunday

Mumbai Indians' plans to return to dominance in the Indian Premier League included moves for Jofra Archer and Tim David on the second day of the auction in Bangalore.

Archer, who is highly unlikely to be able to play any part in the 2022 IPL season, was a late entry onto the auction list and his presence led to a bidding war between Mumbai, former team Rajasthan Royals and Sunrisers Hyderabad on Sunday.

However, it was Mumbai who came out on top - the five-time champions successful with an offer of 8 crore (roughly £784,000).

"Jofra is a player Mahela [Jayawardene, the head coach] gave his first professional debut to. So happy to have gotten them together," Akash Ambani, the Mumbai owner, said.

Archer's signing will be with 2023 in mind - they will not be permitted to sign a replacement player for the bowler while he continues his rehab during 2022 - but that doesn’t mean the franchise had completely lost sight of this year. And their activity elsewhere in the auction on Sunday proved it.

David, the Singapore international, was the subject of intense bidding between Mumbai and both Rajasthan and Kolkata Knight Riders.

The free-scoring, hard-hitting middle-order batsman - who will be used as a finisher in the Mumbai setup alongside Kieron Pollard - eventually went for 8.25 crore (roughly £805,000).

"Tim David is going to partner (Kieron) Pollard at No.6. We have been tracking Tim and he has got success at RCB last year. Looking forward to seeing him and Pollard finishing innings for us," Ambani said.

Meanwhile, the bowling unit was considerably bolstered by the arrivals of two overseas quicks.

Tymal Mills represented a bargain at 1.5 crore (£145,000), while Daniel Sams of Australia (2.6 crore, £250,000) brings both dynamism with the ball and ability with the bat to the Indians’ side.

The prospect of Mills and Archer teaming up with Jasprit Bumrah in 2023 should scare most finishers on the IPL circuit.

"Although it is going to be in next year, but very happy to have a lethal combination," Ambani said. Tymal (Mills, who was also bought by the franchise) has been a lethal death bowler; Mahela coaches him in the Hundred and he has managed to stay injury-free.

Having made headlines with the capture of Ishan Kishan for an auction-topping 15.25 crore (£1.5million), and spending 3 crore (£293,000) on Dewald Brevis - the South Africa Under 19 international - this was a typically astute performance from the recruitment team at Mumbai.

N Tilak Varma - former India Under 19 batsman, who went to the Under 19 World Cup in 2020 - also arrived for 1.7 crore (£165,000).

Varma had a decent Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy for Hyderabad late last year - with 215 runs at 35 - and at 19 years old is very much one for the future.

And in the latter stages of day two, Mumbai's happy habit of finding a bargain cropped up again, as they collected the useful West Indies allrounder Fabian Allen for his base price, adding both batting power and spin bowling potential.

It was a good day.
