Smith tells Maxwell to 'train smarter' as he is left out of Aussie ODI squad

Allrounder has not been included in the 14-man party for games against England

Glenn Maxwell has been left out of Australia's one-day international squad for the upcoming matches against England and told by captain Steve Smith that "he could train a little bit smarter".

Maxwell is perhaps the most surprising omission from the Aussies' 14-man party ahead of the five-game series, which begins next week, as the home side's selectors continue to seek consistency from the Victoria all-rounder.

The 29-year-old averages 32.30 in 50-over international cricket but has passed 40 in just three of 17 innings stretching back to January 2016.

His skipper has said Maxwell needs to reassess the way in which he prepares for games as he looks to restablish himself in the Australian side in time for next year's World Cup.

"He could train a little bit smarter," Smith said.

"We've all seen the way he can come out and play and do all his funky stuff and be pretty cool with that.

"But when he puts his head down he's actually a really good batsman, as we've seen in Shield cricket.

"If he keeps his head switched on and trains really well and focuses on basic things, probably more than the expansive things, then I think that will help him have his consistency."

There is room in the squad for hard-hitting Brisbane Heat batsman Chris Lynn, however, despite recent hamstring and shoulder problems, while Australia's other middle-order options are Marcus Stoinis, Travis Head and Mitch Marsh.

Tim Paine, who returned to the Test frame for the Ashes, keeps the gloves in favour of Matthew Wade, while there are call-ups for the uncapped but in-form West Australian seam pair of Jhye Richardson and Andrew Tye.
