Zimbabwe have been suspended from the ICC with immediate effect after the governing body found the country's cricketing administration was not free from governmental interference.
Zimbabwe Cricket have been stripped of their ICC funding and its national teams will not be permitted to take part in ICC events, after the decision was taken at a board meeting in London on Thursday.
A Full Member, ZC was found to be in breach of of Article 2.4 (c) and (d) of the ICC constitution, which stipulates an obligation for Members to provide "a process for free and democratic elections and to ensure that there is no government interference in its governance and/or administration for cricket respectively".
The ICC has demnaded that the elected Zimbabwe Cricket Board be reinstated to office within three months. The situation in the African country will be discussed at the next board meeting of the governing body in October.
ICC chairman Shashank Manohar said: “We do not take the decision to suspend a Member lightly, but we must keep our sport free from political interference. What has happened in Zimbabwe is a serious breach of the ICC Constitution and we cannot allow it to continue unchecked.
“The ICC wants cricket to continue in Zimbabwe in accordance with the ICC Constitution.”
The Croatia Cricket Federation and the Zambia Cricket Union have both also been suspended for persistent non-compliance with membership criteria.
