England's players revelled in their first World Cup triumph after a super-over win over New Zealand at Lord's.

Both sides made 241 from their 50 overs and saw the match decided by 12 balls, which England won as they had hit more boundaries in their 50 overs with both sides scoring 15.

Opener Jonny Bairstow said: "That was one hell of a game, it edged one way and then the other. The way the guys came out in that super over was huge.

"The way Stokes and Buttler built their partnership, that has won us the game at the end of the day.

"What a spectacle it was, what an atmosphere, to play at Lord's is one thing but to play a World Cup final at Lord's is a completely different matter."

England needed a Super Over to beat New Zealand

Wicketkeeper Jos Buttler added: "It was unbelievable, I thought I had seen everything in cricket and then it was just ridiculous wasn't it? It is very hard to put into words but what an unbelievable day.

"I don't know what happened at the end there still."

Joe Root was frustrated during his innings, but was reduced to tears as he said: "It is hard to sum it up, what a day and what a tournament. We have come through some difficult periods in the group stage, but the guys went about it when the pressure was on.

"It was almost written in the stars for Ben, he has been through such a tough time.

"I think after what he has been through over the last couple of years and that World T20 final [in 2016], I am so happy and proud of him to be at the fulcrum of it.

"I played the worst innings of my professional career but it has become the best day of my professional career now."

Jofra Archer, who bowled the super over for England and defended 16 runs, said: "My heart is still racing.

"It is the probably one of the only tournaments I have won and I would have been quite disappointed if we hadn't have won but they are such a rare bunch of fellas, especially Ben who tried to calm me down before I bowled.

"They [my teammates] have been a really good family to me, I wouldn't want to spend this moment with any other bunch of people right now. They have really welcomed me with open arms.

"Even last night I couldn't get to sleep, it was a really massive day but we showed what we can do and that we can win from anywhere."
