Commonwealth Games women's T20 schedule announced

The eight-team T20 event will run from July 29 to August 7, with Australia facing India in a rematch of the 2020 Women’s T20 World Cup final in the tournament opener

The schedule has been released for the women’s T20 event at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

Australia will take on India in a rematch of the 2020 Women’s T20 World Cup final in the tournament opener on Friday, July 29 at Edgbaston, while the bronze and gold medal matches have been confirmed for Sunday, August 7.

England will get their campaign underway on Saturday, July 30, when they face the winner of the qualifying tournament which is due to take place in January 2022. They will then play South Africa on August 2 and New Zealand on August 4.

Seven of the eight participating nations have been decided, with Australia, India, Pakistan and Barbados (representing West Indies) in Group A and England, Australia and South Africa confirmed for Group B.

Ann-Louise Morgan, Commonwealth Games Federation sport director, said: "It is a special milestone to be unveiling the first matches for Birmingham 2022. There is no doubt that the cricket T20 and netball competitions will showcase the very best of Commonwealth Sport as well as women’s sport."

ICC acting chief executive, Geoff Allardice, added: "We have seen tremendous growth of the women’s game over the past few years and the Commonwealth Games will undoubtedly be another major moment on that journey.

"Today’s announcement of the match schedule gives fans lots to look forward to, not least with the opening game between ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2020 finalists Australia and India and we know that Edgbaston will provide a great stage for the competition."
