India batsman Veda Krishnamurthy has warned her side not to lose focus in the wake of an impressive win over Australia in the T20 World Cup curtain-raiser.

Harmanpreet Kaur’s side beat the host nation by 17 runs despite struggling to assert themselves with the bat.

Yet, with Australia seemingly beginning to cruise towards victory, leg-spinner Poonam Yadav tore through the middle order of Meg Lanning’s team to clinch a remarkable result in the first game of the competition.

“We can’t be complacent with the victory,” Krishnamurthy said. “We have to let go of those emotions now and focus on repeating all the good things we did.

“We want to make sure we have enough of a score for our bowlers to defend.

“At the same time, we can’t be too ambitious with our strokes or risk being run short, but we need to make sure we get enough runs on board.

“As you all saw, our bowling attack is doing really well. It’s all about giving them that extra cushioning.

“If we had finished 15 runs shorter on Friday, it would have been a lot more difficult for us.”

India’s second group clash comes against Bangladesh on Monday.
