Sophie Devine was forced to retire hurt while batting for New Zealand in their crucial Women's World Cup encounter against England after suffering from back pain.

The hosts' captain looked in fine touch, unbeaten on 37 from just 42 balls, when she pulled up sharply as she turned for a second run at the non-striker's end.

After a prolonged period of treatment, she left the field alongside White Ferns medical staff.

"Sophie experienced some soreness in her back while batting," read a statement from New Zealand issued just before the innings' halfway mark.

"She's receiving treatment now. Medical team will see how she responds to treatment before a decision is made on a return for remainder of innings."

Only Rachael Haynes has scored more runs in the tournament than Devine, who opened the competition with a hundred in a losing cause against West Indies, before following up with 93 in New Zealand's last outing against South Africa, which also ended in defeat.

Sophie I know that Im an Aussie but please listen to me,I 1st huurt my back ,the same by the look of it , in 1989 they told me I would be fine , Im not now at 62 yrs old I am mostly in a wheel chair if I leave my home at all. Most of the time I don't leave my home as it causes me too much pain. Please get a 2nd and 3rd and 4th opinion as this wont just ruin your career , it could ruin your life ,because of my back weakness I fell and broke my leg last yr clean through, They replaced my hip ball as well as they said the break was so close to my hip Im just saying you are a star player for New Zealand and they need you ,but Drs lie , thats a fact have lived in agony since it happened to me . I saw you go down and you hurt so bad I coud feel your pain , they probably gave you pain killers and said it was just a pulled muscle ,PLEASE for your sake get checked out , pain killers mask the real roblem and I would hate to see that happen to you Ihate my life as your team you are needed, what is the rest of your life going to be like? It will only get worse as time goes on , Im ony thining of you when you aren't needed anymore like me Best of luck and listen toyor body it talks to you!
