Who is in form?

Because seemingly there is always a men's World Cup around the corner, West Indies and England now turn their attention to the T20 format and the road to June 2024.

After a tightly contested three-match ODI series, this is the real meat of the tour as preparations begin in earnest for the tournament which sees the Windies enter as co-hosts and England as defending champions.

If you have any enthusiasm left that you've not already invested in the run-up to the festive period, this series carries genuine value and purpose.

Surely the only thing worse than not qualifying for a World Cup is showing up and flattering to deceive. The 2022 T20 showcase was a low point for West Indies, who finished bottom of their first-round group after heavy losses to Ireland and Scotland (and without Alzarri Joseph's performance against Zimbabwe, it may have been worse).

Despite a post-tournament review stating they had a "golden opportunity to hit the reset button" they stuck with a familiar group for the South Africa series five months later - a decision which was vindicated by a 2-1 win. The matches against an understrength India saw some high-profile figures return and another series triumph followed. At last, there is evidence of an upward trajectory.

Having won the last time England were on these shores, albeit months before they scooped their second T20 World Cup in Australia, they will be confident of building on that. Jos Buttler's squad retains the core of the group - nine to be exact - which floundered badly in the ODI tournament in India.

Inevitably, much of the responsibility for delivering an about-turn falls at the feet of Adil Rashid, 35, who is relatively refreshed having missed the ODIs. Chris Woakes and Reece Topley add another layer of experience.

Who is involved?

There is rarely a West Indies squad announcement these days without a player being called back in from the wild and Andre Russell is the candidate on this occasion, more than two years on from his last international outing.

Fresh from playing in the T10 League (where Moeen Ali jets in from) for runners-up Deccan Gladiators, his brutality with bat and ball barely needs introducing.

ODI skipper Shai Hope (vice-captain for this series) and Shimron Hetmyer are recent returnees for this format and Sherfane Rutherford is also back.

Jason Holder and Nicholas Pooran turned down central contracts and made themselves unavailable for the ODIs but are involved here.

Freshness is provided by Matthew Forde, who bowled the Windies to the ODI series win with a fine powerplay display and there is a recall for Gudakesh Motie. Johnson Charles, Obed McCoy, Odean Smith and Oshane Thomas are among those on the fringes of selection and overlooked on this occasion.

There were few genuine standout selections in England's party. The Dawid Malan era is over for the time being, missing out on selection for both white-ball groups and Chris Jordan is spending the first part of the winter in the Big Bash League.

Josh Tongue was forced to withdraw from the tour due to injury and hasn't been replaced in the T20 group, while John Turner will be eagerly anticipating a debut.

Tymal Mills is part of the evergreen half of the bowling attack alongside Topley (who has recovered from the broken finger which ended his World Cup) Woakes, Moeen and Rashid who are all liable to be in and around the squad next June.

West Indies squad: Rovman Powell, Shai Hope, Roston Chase, Matthew Forde, Shimron Hetmyer, Jason Holder, Akeal Hosein, Alzarri Joseph, Brandon King, Kyle Mayers, Gudakesh Motie, Nicholas Pooran, Andre Russell, Sherfane Rutherford, Romario Shepherd

England squad: Jos Buttler (c), Rehan Ahmed, Moeen Ali, Gus Atkinson, Harry Brook, Sam Curran, Ben Duckett, Will Jacks, Liam Livingstone, Tymal Mills, Adil Rashid, Phil Salt, Josh Tongue, Reece Topley, John Turner, Chris Woakes

What is the weather forecast?

Conditions are unsettled for the first match in Barbados, with rain scheduled throughout the afternoon and into the early evening, though they may have clear in time for a reduced game.

A similar story beckons for the second and third T20Is at St George's, when inclement conditions are expected until later afternoon.

It will be hoped rain will stay away for the conclusion of the series in Trinidad, with the forecast showing clear skies for the fifth T20I.

What are the odds?

For the first T20I in Bridgetown, England start as favourites at 3/10 with West Indies standing at 13/5.
