Wood sustained the problem in his right elbow during the West Indies first innings in the first match of the series in Antigua last week, and was unable to bowl in the second innings
Saqib Mahmood will make his Test debut in Barbados after Mark Wood was ruled out of the game against West Indies through injury.
Wood sustained the problem in his right elbow during the West Indies first innings in the first match of the series in Antigua last week, and was unable to bowl in the second innings.
The issue has proven too difficult to overcome in the short turnaround between that draw and the clash at the Kensington Oval, which is due to start on Wednesday, opening the door for another member of the bowling unit on tour in the Caribbean.
The beneficiary is Mahmood, the Lancashire quick who offers good pace and hostile lines. He has already made his international bow in limited-overs cricket, and now steps up to the red-ball arena.

Mark Wood has been ruled out of the second Test through injury
England captain Joe Root said of the young seamer: "The one thing is he's very mature for a guy who hasn't played a huge amount of international cricket; he has an understanding of how he wants to operate.
"He's been very impressive, he's got a slightly different trajectory and will give us a point of difference. He has done when he's played in other formats. Clearly he has good control, especially if the ball moves with reverse swing. It's a great option to have up our sleeve."
Mahmood's inclusion in place of Wood is the only change for England.
Ollie Robinson continues to miss out, with the English management keen to give the seamer - who impressed on the Ashes tour but struggled with fitness issues - time to show he is over a back spasm suffered during the warm-up game in Antigua prior to the series.
Robinson experienced a similar problem during the fifth Ashes Test in Hobart but he has been training without further issue in Barbados this week.
England have not yet ruled out the possibility that he could return for the third game of the three-match series, which is set to take place on Grenada next week.
Alex Lees will get another go at the top of the order after registering a pair of single-figure scores on debut at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium.
