Carlos Brathwaite has labelled England’s decision to take the first Test in Antigua into the final over "a bit disrespectful."

England declared with a lead of 285 on day five and needed to bowl West Indies out in order to win the match, a result which briefly seemed possible when a flurry of four wickets for just eight runs reduced the home side from 59 without loss to 67 for 4.

Nkrumah Bonner and Jason Holder thwarted their efforts and steered West Indies to 147 for 4 at close. Together, they added 80 runs from 215 balls and were rarely troubled by England's bowlers.

But England captain, Joe Root, only shook hands after the first ball of the final over, when it became mathematically impossible to win.

Speaking on BT Sport, West Indies international Brathwaite said: "If I were Kraigg Brathwaite or any of the senior player in the West Indies dressing room, I would have found it a bit disrespectful that in the last hour, with two set batsmen playing as they were and the pitch offering nothing, England still felt they could get six wickets, going all the way down to five balls left."

The 33-year-old also hopes Root’s decision to keep bowling will give West Indies the "determination" to defeat England, continuing: "Would England have done that if it were an Ashes Test? Would they have done that against India, New Zealand, Pakistan?

"I think the answer is no, so why have they done it against us?

"If West Indies need any sort of steely determination added, I think that passage of play should have given them that. We are a better team than we're given credit for. Now we have two Test matches to prove that we are better than England think we are."

The second Test between West Indies and England is scheduled to begin in Barbados on March 16.
