Adelaide: Sydney Sixers 82, Adelaide Strikers 84-2 - Adelaide Strikers win by eight wickets

Scorecard

A calamitous collapse after winning the toss and electing to bat saw Sydney Sixers bowled out for just 82 in an eight-wicket defeat against Adelaide Strikers, who took full advantage of the bottom team’s struggles.

The two-time champions lost Alyssa Healy, Ashleigh Gardner, Ellyse Perry, Shafali Verma and Nicole Bolton inside the powerplay – Healy, Gardner and Verma to ducks – as Sixers wilted to 52 for 8 before recovering somewhat to clamber to a final score still short of triple figures.

It remained well below par as Strikers, led by Sarah Coyte and Darcie Brown, who took five wickets between them, clinically ran through their big-name opponents.

In response, Katie Mack and Dane van Niekerk got their side off to a rapid start, with Laura Wolvaardt and Tahlia McGrath left to put the finishing touches to a brutal victory.

It means that Strikers are assured a place in the top four for just the third time.

Shafali Verma was run out without facing

Megan Schutt dismissed Healy with the second ball of the match, before Gardner fell to her first ball – a fourth successive duck for the allrounder, who struck 86 in her last innings ahead of this dismal run.

Brown then trapped Perry in front, and Verma was run out without facing a ball one delivery later. In the next over, Bolton was also run out. And when Ange Reakes was caught off the bowling of Amanda-Jade Wellington, Sixers were 30 for 6.

Lauren Cheatle and Stella Campbell ensured Sixers passed their lowest-ever Women’s Big Bash total, passing 73 in the 16th over.

Sixers will finish their campaign on Sunday against Perth Scorchers, who are all but certain of a place in the final.
