Lea Tahuhu has joined Sydney Thunder as a replacement overseas signing for the 2022/23 Women's Big Bash.

The New Zealand international will stand in for Amy Jones during Thunder's season opener against Hobart Hurricanes on October 14 and will also be available as cover for injured pace bowler Hannah Darlington.

Jones will be available for Thunder's clash with Perth Scorchers on October 16 while Darlington, currently recovering from a knee injury, is expected to miss her side's first seven fixtures of WBBL08.

Tahuhu, an intimidating pace bowler, has previously represented Melbourne Renegades in the WBBL, taking 53 wickets in 61 appearances and recording an economy of 6.02. She has also been capped 68 times by New Zealand in the format, picking up 56 wickets.

Saskia Horley has been recruited as a local replacement. The Scotland international made four appearances for Sydney Thunder in 2019/20.

Head coach, Trevor Griffin, said: "I'm absolutely delighted to have Lea playing for us. She's the fastest bowler in the world; she has plenty of experience including international matches, World Cups, she's played in major T20 tournaments - including the WBBL and the UK – and has a wealth of knowledge.

"Saskia went away and worked on her game and the results have been outstanding. She's been very impressive, and I'm happy to have her back in Thunder's colours.

"She is a three-stacked player – one who can bat, bowl, and field extremely well. I'm looking forward to again working with Saskia."
