The Hundred Draft 2022: Men's selections revealed - team-by-team updates

The draft for the men's Hundred took place on Monday, April 4 and each team's selections were revealed on Tuesday, April 5. Here's how the squads will line up.

All teams still have a Vitality Blast Wildcard and Overseas Wildcard to play in June.

London Spirit: Eoin Morgan's side snap up Kieron Pollard

Awarded the first draft pick after finishing bottom of the table in the inaugural edition of The Hundred, London Spirit made the most of their opportunity, snapping up Kieron Pollard for £125,000.

The West Indies international was due to play for Welsh Fire in 2021 before making himself unavailable. He adds nearly 600 matches of T20 experience as well as over 11,000 runs and 350-plus wickets to Eoin Morgan’s squad.

Spin-bowling allrounder Liam Dawson was the other marquee signing at £125,000, trading Southern Brave green for Spirit blue. He made four appearances for the champions in 2021 but bowled just 7.4 'fives' and faced only eight balls.

With two picks at £75,000, London Spirit added Australian fast bowler Riley Meredith and Yorkshire allrounder Jordan Thompson, who was released by Northern Superchargers.

And they rounded off their draft with two county stalwarts, adding top-order batter, and former Birmingham Phoenix, Daniel Bell-Drummond and re-signing Hampshire T20 bowler, Chris Wood, who took two wickets in four appearances last season. Both players were signed for £50,000.

Welsh Fire: Joe Clarke, Tom Banton and Adam Zampa cash in

English duo Joe Clarke and Tom Banton were among the big winners at the draft, with both top-order batters earning £125,000 contracts with Welsh Fire.

Banton, who scored just 96 runs in eight outings last season, was re-signed by Welsh Fire after being released in February. Clarke, meanwhile, as released by Manchester Originals after scoring 127 runs in seven matches.

Australian international Adam Zampa also earned a six-figure contract, joining Welsh Fire for £100,000. The spinner and World Cup winner, who has taken over 200 T20 wickets, was due to represent Birmingham Phoenix last season.

Fellow overseas signings David Miller and Naseem Shah were recruited for £75,000 and £60,000 respectively. The former is a boundary-smashing middle-order batter while the latter is one of the rising stars of the Pakistan national side and a right-arm fast bowler.

Their remaining two picks were Warwickshire duo Sam Hain (£50,000) and Jacob Bethell (£30,000).

Hain, a consistent run-scorer in both List A and T20 cricket for Birmingham Bears, was released by Manchester Originals in February after making just one appearance in 2021. 18-year-old Bethell, meanwhile, is a highly-touted batting allrounder.

Manchester Originals: Andre Russell leads the quintet

Andre Russell headlines the list of five new faces for Manchester Originals.

The West Indies international – a veteran of over 400 T20 appearances – was their first draft pick, arriving in the £125,000 category. He was due to represent champions Southern Brave in 2021.

Fellow allrounder Wanindu Hasaranga also picked up a six-figure price tag, signing for the Originals for £100,000. The Sri Lanka international lit up the recent T20 World Cup, taking 16 wickets with his economical leg-spin and scoring 119 runs at 148.75.

Australian duo Daniel Worrall and Sean Abbott will also call Manchester home in 2022. although the former does not class as an overseas signing due to his British passport. Worrall, a pace bowler, was picked up for £75,000 while Sydney Sixers allrounder Abbott cost £60,000.

The Originals’ remaining £125,000 was spent on Surrey allrounder Laurie Evans. The 34-year-old, who represented Oval Invincibles in 2021, impressed in the 2021/22 Big Bash, scoring 361 runs at a strike rate of 144.40 for champions Perth Scorchers.

Northern Superchargers: Experienced heads dominate draft picks

Northern Superchargers have added valuable experience to their squad after picking up a quartet of white-ball veterans in Dwayne Bravo, Wahab Riaz, Roelef van der Merwe and Luke Wright.

West Indies allrounder Bravo, who went undrafted last time, was Superchargers’ first pick at £125,000.

Riaz represented Trent Rockets in 2021, picking up 4 for 30 on debut, but injuries restricted him to just that one appearance. The Pakistan international, a left-arm pacer, was selected at £75,000.

Somerset allrounder van der Merwe, who was picked up for £40,000, was ever-present for London Spirit in 2021, scoring 77 runs and picking up five wickets. Wright, by contrast, didn’t make a single appearance for Trent Rockets. Drafted for £30,000 he brings over 8,000 top-order T20 runs to the table.

Adam Hose was the youngest player drafted by Northern Superchargers by a solid seven years. The 29-year-old middle-order batter, who didn’t make an appearance for Birmingham Phoenix in 2021, was selected in the £60,000 category.

Oval Invincibles: Sunil Narine returns

After missing out on a spot on the retained list, Sunil Narine is back for Oval Invincibles.

The West Indies international, a mystery spinner and electric batter, took scored 62 runs at a strike rate of 131.91 and took seven wickets in 2021, and was the Invincibles’ first pick at £125,000.

Fellow overseas signing Rilee Rossouw was selected for £60,000. The South African top-order batter was originally drafted by the franchise in 2019 but was unavailable for the 2021 tournament.

With their two £50,000 picks, Sam Billings’ team selected English spinner Danny Briggs, previously of Southern Brave, and Australian Hilton Cartwright. One of the lesser-known overseas signings, Cartwright is a middle-order batter and right-arm medium pacer, with four Australia caps to his name.

Oval Invincibles’ final two picks saw them raid Kent’s T20 Blast-winning squad, selecting Matt Milnes (Welsh Fire) and Jack Leaning (Trent Rockets) for £40,000 apiece. Milnes, a seamer, took 22 T20 wickets last season, while batter Leaning scored 321 runs.

Trent Rockets: Big pay days for Tom Kohler-Cadmore and Ian Cockbain

Tom Kohler-Cadmore and Ian Cockbain received sizeable boosts to their bank accounts following their respective selections for Trent Rockets.

Kohler-Cadmore, who scored 111 runs for Northern Superchargers last season and has made a name for himself as an explosive top-order batter, was picked up for £125,000 – the same price the Rockets paid for Rashid Khan!

Gloucestershire batter Cockbain, meanwhile only scored 85 runs for Welsh Fire in five appearances. However, he shone as a replacement signing in the 2021/22 Big Bash, scoring 239 runs in six appearances for Adelaide Strikers and was selected for £75,000.

New Zealander Colin Munro joined him in the £75,000 category. The top-order batter top-scored for Manchester Originals in 2021, scoring 165 runs at a strike rate of 136.36.

Trent Rockets’ final selection was Nottinghamshire seamer Luke Fletcher, who, like Cockbain, endured a miserable season at Welsh Fire, taking just two wickets. He was selected for £30,000.

Birmingham Phoenix: Matthew Wade headlines new arrivals

Birmingham Phoenix have snared Australia’s talismanic, World Cup-winning wicketkeeper Matthew Wade for the 2022 edition of The Hundred.

The 34-year-old, who has a T20 strike rate above 135, was the club’s first draft pick, earning a £125,000 contract.

Warwickshire fast bowler, Olly Stone, also earned himself a mega payday, joining Phoenix for £100,000.
Stone was unselected in the original draft in 2019 before earning a gig with Northern Superchargers in last February’s replacement draft. However, he missed the tournament after sustaining a season-ending stress fracture in his back in June 2021.

Australia’s Kane Richardson and England red-ball international Matthew Fisher add further pace-bowling depth. Richardson was picked up for £60,000 in round four while Yorkshire bowler Fisher, who was released by Northern Superchargers after making just one appearance in 2021, was picked up for £50,000.

Gloucestershire skipper Graeme van Buuren, a spin bowling allrounder, was their final draft pick, joining Moeen Ali’s side for £30,000.

Southern Brave: Quinton de Kock returns to champions

Quinton de Kock will renew his acquaintance with Southern Brave in 2022 after being drafted at £125,000. He joins Australia international Marcus Stoinis as the most expensive player for the defending champions. The South African wicketkeeper was released by Brave in February but scored 202 runs at a strike rate of 172.64 in 2021.

De Kock said: "I can’t wait to come back and play for Southern Brave this summer and hopefully defend our title. Being part of the side last year was special and it was amazing to see the Ageas Bowl packed full with kids having an amazing time."

After letting Danny Briggs, Delray Rawlins and Liam Dawson go in February, Brave needed a spinner and opted for a curveball selection, picking up England Under-19 international, Rehan Ahmed, for £50,000. The 17-year-old leggie has only made seven List A appearances for Leicestershire but took 12 wickets at the Under-19 World Cup.

Their remaining two picks, both in the £30,000 category, were Hampshire batter Joe Weatherley and Surrey left-arm spinner Dan Moriarty. Neither player was involved in the inaugural  edition of The Hundred.
