Jack Leaning has signed for Trent Rockets as a Covid replacement, ruling the batsman out of Kent’s Royal London Cup clashes with Sussex and Essex.

Leaning, who was appointed as Kent’s captain for the 50-over competition but missed the first two games due to Covid protocols after testing positive earlier in July, returned to the fold at Beckenham against Lancashire on Wednesday, but the game lasted just 14.5 overs before being washed out.

He is filling in with the unbeaten table-toppers for Nottinghamshire allrounder Steven Mullaney, who was deemed a close contact of Rockets’ support staff who tested positive for Covid-19 on Monday.

Leaning was available on Thursday night for their win over London Spirit at Lord’s but was not selected in the playing XI. He will remain with Trent for their clash with Birmingham Phoenix on Sunday.

In last year’s T20 Blast, the right-hander was Kent’s third-highest run-scorer with 287 at 35.87, including an unbeaten 81.
