Fixture: Yorkshire Vikings v Worcestershire Rapids
Venue: Emerald Headingley, Leeds
Dates: Wednesday, June 23, 2021
Start time: 6.30pm
What's the lowdown?
Yorkshire Vikings are in strong white-ball form at present and currently sit at the top of the North Group table. Since losing their second fixture of the season, the Vikings have won three of their four matches (their match against Durham was abandoned) and most recently saw off Derbyshire with a convincing 39-run victory.
Joe Root's side are yet to lose when batting first and demolished Worcestershire by 122 runs in the reverse fixture at New Road. However, while the return of Root is a plus, the international white-ball schedule will deprive them of David Willey, Adil Rashid, Dawid Malan, and Jonny Bairstow for the foreseeable future.
After remaining unbeaten in their first three outings, Worcestershire Rapids now have not won in three - albeit with one washout. They sit sixth, three points off the top four, following a dismal performance against Notts Outlaws on Tuesday.
Remarkably, Worcestershire only managed 86 for 8 from a full 20-over allocation, before Notts knocked off the required runs in 6.2 overs.
Who's in form?
In Bairstow's absence against Derbyshire Falcons, Joe Root and young Harry Brook stepped up with the bat, scoring 49 (36 balls) and 48 not out (34), respectively. Brook now has 183 runs in five appearances, placing him second only to Bairstow (295 runs) in Yorkshire's run standings, and is scoring at a strike rate of 155.08.
With the ball, Dom Bess and overseas signing Lockie Ferguson impressed against Derbyshire, posting identical figures of 3 for 21. Bess now has five wickets and an economy of 6.37 from two appearances while Ferguson has captured nine wickets and is conceding an economical 6.97 runs per over.
Four Worcestershire batsmen have broken 100 runs for the season, but none has more than 110 and only one - Moeen Ali, who is now away with England - has been striking at better than 130.
Brett D'Oliveira has the best economy rate of any bowler in the Blast - 3.40 - but that has only come from five overs. Charlie Morris is the leading wicket-taker for the county so far in the 2021 competition, with seven at 19.28.
What's the team news?
Jonny Tattersall returns to the Yorkshire squad after a loan spell at Gloucestershire. Jonny Bairstow, David Willey and Adil Rashid are away with England.
Yorkshire squad: Gary Ballance, Dom Bess, Harry Brook, Lockie Ferguson, Will Fraine, Matthew Fisher, Tom Kohler-Cadmore, Dominic Leech, Adam Lyth, Josh Poysden, Joe Root, Jonny Tattersall, Jordan Thompson, Matthew Waite
For Worcestershire, Moeen Ali is away with England, Ben Cox deputises as captain.
