Fixture: Sussex Sharks v Glamorgan
Venue: 1st Central County Ground, Hove
Date: Tuesday, June 22, 2021
Start time: 7pm
What’s the lowdown?
Sussex haven't played a match in a week thanks to the inclement weather. Their clash with Surrey was rained off after five overs before not a single delivery was possible for the visit of Somerset.
James Kirtley will be keen that no momentum has been lost from an impressive start to the competition, which saw the Sharks win their opening three games in an emphatic fashion.
Successful chases against Gloucestershire, Hampshire and Essex gives them the best net run rate in the competition and means they are one of two sides still unbeaten.
George Garton's eight wickets at an economy rate of just 5.15 has helped force him into England contention and though Sussex will lose him later in the competition for the ODIs the quality of his contributions cannot be overstated.
Despite Marnus Labuschagne's best efforts (three half-centuries, six wickets) Glamorgan have endured an inconsistent start to the Blast, claiming two wins, three defeats and a no result from their six games.
Those two wins came against the bottom two sides in the South Group - perhaps an indicator as to their future prospects.
Former Reed's graduate Dan Douthwaite has perhaps been the only other stand-out performer during the Blast for the Welsh club, taking eight wickets at an economy rate of 6.93. But they require more consistent contributions.
Who’s in form?
Two unbeaten scores in the 70s mean Phil Salt is averaging 162 after three completed matches, where there is good support from experienced heads Luke Wright and Ravi Bopara.
Elsewhere, the performances of 16-year-old Archie Lenham have been outstanding. After taking three wickets in his TV debut against Hampshire he produced the stand-out moment of the rained off match with Surrey, taking a remarkable catch to dismiss Jason Roy.
Labuschagne's three fifties make him the fourth-highest scorer in the Blast, but those efforts have only delivered two victories. But only Colin Ingram and Nick Selman have reached three figures in the competition so far; a worrying stat if you're a Glamorgan follower.
Wickets have been spread around the team but it is hard to ignore seamer Douthwaite, whose eight scalps have come at 13 apiece, with Chris Dent and Sam Billings among his early victims.
