What’s the lowdown?

Leicestershire, for their part, also endured a defeat in Manchester in their opening match of the 2021 Blast, though their’s was of the more chastening variety.

The Foxes, having been on the receiving end of an unbeaten 73 from 51 from Finn Allen, had 47 after four and a half overs in a chase of 173 but were then strangled by Lancashire’s spinners such that they required 32 from the final two overs: an equation which proved too much for the visitors.

In a taxing 2020 Blast campaign, Derbyshire’s sole victory came against Leicestershire and after an encouraging performance at Old Trafford in their opener they will be hoping for a similar result this time out.

The Falcons took a highly-fancied Lancashire right to the final over in Wednesday’s game, eventually losing by six wickets. Having posted 168 for 7 (after losing Wayne Madsen to an injured hamstring), Derbyshire were left to rue dropping Liam Livingstone on 55 as the opener went onto hit 94 from 58 including the winning runs with three balls to spare.

Who’s in form?

Scott Steel and Rishi Patel put on 52 for the fifth wicket against Lancashire, with the latter striking two sixes on his way to 32 from 17.  With ball in hand, Colin Ackermann was typically frugal, taking 2 for 22 from his four overs including the prize scalp of Jos Buttler, but a double-wicket maiden from seamer Gavin Griffiths meant that he left Manchester with the Foxes standout figures of 4 for 24.

Allrounder Luis Reece performed admirably for the Falcons against Lancashire, a county he last represented in 2016. The 30-year-old served up 59 from 32 opening the batting and 2 for 26 from four economical overs against his former employers. Fynn Hudson-Prentice also came on to take two wickets in his solitary over against the Lightning.

What’s the team news?
