Sri Lanka captain Dinesh Chandimal dealt his side an injury scare on the first day of the Test series against England.

Chandimal hobbled off the field midway through the second session in Galle with what appeared to be a groin problem.

The skipper picked up the knock in innocuous circumstances, pulling up as he turned to run after the ball after it had been nudged into the legside off the bowling of Rangana Herath.

He immediately held the inside of his leg and walked off the pitch to be seen to by the Sri Lanka medical staff.

With ICC regulations preventing the use of runners, the home side would have been hoping the injury was not serious and that Chandimal would be able to bat unimpeded later in the game.

And Sri Lankan fans will have breathed a sigh of relief when their skipper returned to the game after tea.

Suranga Lakmal took charge of the side in the skipper's absence as England recovered from a fragile position at lunch.

Having been 113 for five after the first session, Ben Foakes and Jos Buttler pushed the score on towards 200. Buttler was dismissed for 38, well caught by Niroshan Dickwella off Dilruwan Perera but Foakes then teamed up with Sam Curran to lead the tourists towards respectability.

The pair took the score to 199 for six at the second interval.
