Hopes new facility could stage high-profile fixtures
Future development of cricket at Framlingham College could create the “most attractive cricket ground in the world”.
Cricket at the College has been a prominent sporting pillar of the independent school for nearly 160 years.
And that status would be enhanced by adding a pitch to ‘The Front’, transforming it into a venue for matches.
Built in 1864 as Suffolk’s memorial to Queen Victoria’s husband, Prince Albert, the Grade II listed Victorian-Gothic red-brick school overlooks the 12th Century Framlingham Castle.
In-between, sits The Mere and six acres of manicured grounds called ‘The Front’, flanked by views of the College and the castle.
Director of cricket Chris Gange believes this could open the door for the College to host high-profile fixtures, like Arundel Castle who hosted South Africa v Zimbabwe this summer.
“With Framingham Castle on the right and the school with its impressive clock tower, chapel and statue of Prince Albert on the left - The Front would probably be one of the most attractive cricket grounds in the world”, says Gange.
“For our pupils and local cricket clubs, every match played here presents new opportunities to develop key cricketing skills, and it is always rewarding to see young players develop their understanding of the game’s complexities while also forging friendships and memories.
“Framlingham College delivers an exceptional cricket provision regardless of age or ability, with many pupils pursuing the sport beyond the College at club, university or elite level.
“Learning to manage success and setbacks alike is a crucial part of the experience, and it is always rewarding to see young players develop their understanding of the game’s complexities while forging friendships and memories along the way.”
This year, Framlingham College launched its 2025 Cricket Heritage Fundraiser to raise £135,000 for new Prep and Senior School cricket nets and a new Prep School Pavillion.
As part of the campaign, Simon Roche, head of Framlingham College prep school, completed a 100-mile ultramarathon - running from Lord’s back to the prep school in 24-hours. The College’s team of cyclists also completed the same 100-mile route.
Those interested in investing in the facilities can support by setting up a smaller regular gift, donating a one-off gift or by making a significant donation in exchange for recognition through naming rights of various facilities.
It is absolutely certain that Framlingham College, who are bathed in history, cannot be accused of wishing to stand still.
