Nikhil Malik and Anthony Hillman’s unbroken 84-run partnership led St Paul’s School to a nine-wicket triumph over Dean Close School that kept them in the hunt for The Cricketer Schools 100 crown.
After being caught cold in the opening game of the tournament at Desert Springs by Epsom College, St Paul’s had now hit back with two impressive performances.
They were in complete control of this encounter on the third day when Ned Bowman reduced Dean Close to 19 for 2 in the ninth over.
But then Will Waltham’s aggressive 22 off eight balls allowed Dean Close to at least post some kind of score with 90 for 4 off their 100 balls.
Ben Lord then gave Dean Close hope when S Francombe edged behind for a golden duck early in the run-chase.
But Malik and Hillman weathered the storm and gradually began to creep ahead of a run a ball before Hillman branched out with a flurry of boundaries off George Collingwood to bring the game to an early finish in the Andalusian evening.
The win put St Paul’s level on four points with Canford School and Westminster School, with unbeaten Epsom leading the way on six. There are two rounds of games remaining in the round-robin tournament.
