Fixture: South East Stars v Lightning
Venue: Arundel Castle, Arundel
Date: Saturday, July 3, 2021
Start time: 2.30pm
What's the lowdown?
Southern Vipers have only lost once since forming in summer of 2020, so it should come as no surprise to hear that they got their Charlotte Edwards Cup campaign off to winning start. Facing Central Sparks at Edgbaston, Vipers bowled their hosts out for 83, a total which Danni Wyatt and co. chased down with 41 balls to spare - the perfect revenge for Sparks' shock victory in the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy. Vipers took maximum points from the match but are currently second in Group A on net run rate.
Lightning, hosting South East Stars in round one, suffered a similar fate to Central Sparks. Electing to bat, they were skittled for a sub-par 107 from 19.1 overs and could do very little to stop the Stars completing their chase with 41 balls and six wickets left.
Who should I watch out for?
If you only watch one person on Saturday, make it Southern Vipers bowler, Charlie Dean. The 20-year-old took a five-for against Sparks, finishing with figures of 5 for 19 after demolishing their tail, and is currently the leading wicket-taker in both the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy and Charlotte Edwards Cup. Wyatt, meanwhile, impressed with the bat, scoring 45 runs off 33 balls in a show of defiance after being left out of England's white-ball squad.
For Lightning, Bethany Harmer and Abigail Freeborn were the standout batters, scoring 34 runs (25 balls) and 30 runs (23 balls), respectively. Freeborn's knock, in particular, showed promise as she provided Lightning's lone middle-order resistance against South East Stars.
Kathryn and Sarah Bryce are always worth keeping an eye on. Both players have struggled to recreate their 2020 form this season but it shouldn't be long before the Scottish sisters explode into life.
