The Pakistan Super League is back, and its overseas quota is dominated by English players.

So which familiar names are in action in the PSL in 2023? NICK FRIEND offers a bitesize team-by-team guide...

Islamabad United

Alex Hales: The England opener comes into the tournament on the back of an excellent T20 winter – first in winning the World Cup with his country, more recently lighting up the ILT20 at Desert Vipers. He is a long-time regular in the PSL, preparing for his fifth year with Islamabad United; he turned down an England tour to fulfil this deal and will join Islamabad on February 26.

Tom Curran: The Surrey seamer has stepped away from red-ball cricket for the time being to focus on his T20 cricket and look after his physical and mental health after a battle with injuries. He was picked up January's the supplementary draft.

Gus Atkinson: One of the winners of this winter's franchise circuit, the Surrey man – by no means a regular in county cricket but a seamer with height, pace and bounce – has impressed in the ILT20 with Desert Vipers and, like Curran, is a late call-up through the supplementary draft. He is a partial replacement for Afghanistan's Rahmanullah Gurbaz.

Tymal Mills: The left-armer has endured a difficult winter; he withdrew from the Big Bash after his daughter suffered a stroke. Since the end of last summer, he has played just once competitively – for Desert Vipers in the ILT20. He is a partial replacement for Alex Hales.

Moeen Ali: The England allrounder is taking part in the white-ball series in Bangladesh, which means he won't be available until March 14 – by which time the group stage will be over. Rassie van der Dussen has been picked up as a partial replacement.

Karachi Kings

James Vince: The Hampshire captain, who has been busy on franchise duty with Sydney Sixers and Gulf Giants so far this winter, will miss three Karachi Kings fixtures – their seventh, eighth and ninth – after his selection in England's ODI squad to face Bangladesh.

James Fuller: Another Hampshire representative at Karachi, Fuller will join his teammates from the SA20, where he has been in action for Sunrisers Eastern Cape. The 33-year-old, born in South Africa, is a bustling allrounder.

Adam Rossington: The Essex wicketkeeper has had a breakthrough winter, impressing as a hard-hitting opener for Sunrisers Eastern Cape after emerging as a surprise signing through the SA20 auction. He had a decent Hundred with London Spirit and replaces James Vince for a three-game period when Vince is with England's ODI squad in early March.

Lahore Qalandars

Liam Dawson: The Hampshire allrounder is among those who have chosen the PSL over England's tour of Bangladesh. Without a central contract, he would stand to lose money if he went as part of Jos Buttler's squad. Instead, he has committed to Qalandars.

Jordan Cox: The Kent wicketkeeper-batter will be a late arrival; he endured a disappointing stint in the SA20 with Sunrisers Eastern Cape, where he has managed 19 runs in five games. He only becomes available on February 21 after an England Lions tour of Sri Lanka. Kusal Mendis will offset his initial absence at Qalandars.

Sam Billings: The England wicketkeeper-batter opted against being involved in this year's IPL so he can be ready to play for Kent in red-ball-cricket. He has signed up for the PSL, though, as a partial replacement for Rashid Khan, while the Afghanistan leggie is on international duty.

Peshawar Zalmi

Tom-Kohler Cadmore: The hard-hitting opener, who recently left Yorkshire for Somerset, managed 323 runs in 10 ILT20 games for Sharjah Warriors, with a third of those coming in an unbeaten 106. He first played in the PSL for Quetta Gladiators in 2018.

Richard Gleeson: The Lancashire fast bowler is a short-term replacement for Rovman Powell from March 8, when several players depart for the series between West Indies and South Africa.

Quetta Gladiators

Jason Roy: The England opener rediscovered some form in the ODI series against South Africa, and he will miss a chunk of the PSL for his country's tour of Bangladesh between February 26 and March 14.

Will Smeed: The white-ball specialist made a splash in the PSL last year; he has scores of 97 and 99 in six matches in the 2022 competition and arrives on the back of a frustrating ILT20.

Will Jacks: The Surrey allrounder had a terrific SA20 until leaving to join England's Test tour of New Zealand; he will replace Roy while his county teammate is in Bangladesh.
