In his playing pomp, he was one of the most well-known allrounders on the county circuit.

Now, Peter Trego is transferring that ability to turn his hand to anything into the business arena – and he wants to help club cricketers out in so doing.

The former Somerset, Kent, Middlesex and Nottinghamshire man has launched Cricket Star, which gives players the chance to win thousands of pounds’ worth of cricket kit for a fraction of the cost.

Trego, who has worked in the competitions space since his retirement from playing in 2021, found a gap in the market when it came to cricket kit giveaways.

Now, Cricket Star is filling that gap, with England and Somerset spinner Jack Leach backing his former teammate.

“There’s something really unique about cricketers and their equipment,” says Trego, who represented his country at under-19 level.

“Even having had 25 years as a professional, when a new bat was delivered to the dressing room it was like the Lord of the Rings seeing Gollum’s ring being thrown into the middle.

“Everyone wants to touch it and smell the linseed oil, so I’ve always had a huge passion for cricket kit.”

Cricket Star has given away around £30,000 worth of kit, with individual prizes valued at between £600 and £2,000.

Ticket prices are as low as 39p for draws to win bats, equipment bundles and more.

“Because we’re the first to market in cricket, we can be really competitive with our odds,” adds Trego.

“For a small amount of money, you have a fair chance of winning some pretty awesome kit.

“It’s really exciting and we’re looking forward to growing the business.

“Being able to bring mates from my career into help has been pretty awesome too.”

Leach’s involvement so far has included bowling an over against a 4th XI player to promote the brand, while his “wheelie good mystery bag” is among the current prizes on offer on the Cricket Star website.

“My first thoughts when I heard about it was that this is Tregs, so he’s going to make it a success,” says Leach.

“Having shared a dressing room with him, I had some great memories on and off the field.

“To be able to carry that relationship on with something exciting that’s cricket-related really excited me.

“It’s been great to see it get up and running, people are really engaging with it.”
