The Norfolk-based firm invented the original folding practice cage and now wants to help financially stretched cricket clubs cope with the ever-changing demands of the modern game

When you’re considering upgrading facilities at your cricket club, being able to rely on a world leader is a big plus.
DEM Sports are true pioneers in this field, having been the first in the world to design a concertina-effect folding cricket net system – in short, they built the original folding practice cage.
It’s an innovation that has led to recognition and work from many of the major players in professional cricket.
Among those to have taken on DEM products over the years are counties including Durham, Gloucestershire, Hampshire, Leicestershire, Sussex, Warwickshire and Worcestershire.
But it is not just the big names DEM founder John Loveday is interested in helping.
An engineer by trade, Loveday is a former club cricketer himself and therefore has a deep understanding of the issues posed every day by cricket clubs looking to invest in their facilities.
With clubs needing to be ever-flexible with changes to the modern game, such as the introduction of more white-ball cricket at amateur level, he is conscious of wanting to help them find practical and cost-effective solutions in order to keep up with the latest trends.
Revolving black and white sightscreens, now a necessity in many cricket leagues around the country, are among the products DEM offer.
“We’re constantly investing in up-to-date technology and equipment, which will mean we will be able to hand down the cost savings to the customer at the end of the process. We are planning to develop a budget range of products in time for the 2026 season, without compromising the quality for which we are well-known. And in terms of durability, we have installations that have lasted many years” says Loveday.
“We know clubs are struggling for funding, so we hope a budget range will help with that, and with the ongoing initiatives to develop cricket at grass roots level.
All the Norfolk firm’s products are designed and built in Great Britain, with input from respected figures in the sport, including the groundstaff at Lord’s, who installed a four‑lane folding net at the Nursery Ground.
International clients include those as far afield as the USA, Hong Kong and Australia, enhanced by a global partnership with Batting Cages, Australia.
“We’re confident we can solve clubs’ and individuals’ problems because of our unique design system and our in-depth understanding of the needs of individuals, clubs and schools” adds Loveday. “There are all sorts of things we can do in the manufacturing process to bring about the perfect solution for everyone as we also specialize in bespoke products”.
