John was an outstanding player, for the same rural Barbados team as Conrad Hunte. He was spotted, along with three other Barbadians when an England team of Captains toured. Kent took Shepherd; Essex took Keith Boyce; Gloucestershire took Wycliffe Phillips; and Sussex took Geoffrey Greenidge. The first three were then (1964) playing for Maple Club, near E W Swanston's residence at Sandy Lane. John Shepherd later became an ICC ambassador at large.
