Raja is just the fourth former international to take on the PCB chairmanship, following in the footstpes of Abdul Hafeez Kardar, Javed Burki and Ijaz Butt
Ramiz Raja is the new chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board, succeeding Ehsan Mani.
Raja, who captained Pakistan and was part of the 1992 World Cup-winning side, was unanimously elected at a special meeting. He will serve a three-year term, having been nominated by his former teammate Imran Khan, now the country’s Prime Minister and patron of the governing body.
Raja was Pakistan’s 18th Test captain and their 12th in ODIs; in all, he featured in 255 international matches, scoring 8,674 runs. He previously worked as PCB chief executive between 2003 and 2004, while he also sits on the MCC World Cricket Committee and has become a respected pundit.
He said: “One of my key focuses will be to help introduce in the Pakistan men’s cricket team the same culture, mindset, attitude and approach that once made Pakistan one of the most feared cricket playing nations.
Raja replaces Ehsan Mani in the role
“As an organisation, we all need to get behind the national team and provide them the desired assistance and support so that they can produce that brand of cricket, which the fans also expect from them each time they step on to the field of play.
“Obviously, as a former cricketer, my other priority will be to look into the welfare of our past and present cricketers. The game has and will always be about the cricketers and, as such, they deserve more recognition and respect from their parent institution.”
