The venue is handed a second demerit point in successive Tests, with match referee Andy Pycroft deeming conditions "gave almost no assistance to any type of bowler"

England's dramatic victory in the first Test against Pakistan was secured on a Rawalpindi pitch rated "below average" by the ICC.

A massive 1,768 runs were scored, the most in a Test played over a maximum of five days.

Though Ben Stokes' side were able to force a victory in the dying embers of day five, the authorities have responded to the conditions.

Along with the damning verdict, the venue has been given a demerit point for the second Test in a row.

Pakistan and Australia's stalemate in March, when just 14 wickets fell for 1,187 runs, was given a similar rating when the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium last hosted a Test.

PCB chair Ramiz Raja admitted mid-way through the Test that the pitch was "embarrassing" while captain Babar Azam was less than satisfied with the conditions.

ICC match referee Andy Pycroft said: "It was a very flat pitch which gave almost no assistance to any type of bowler.

"That was the main reason why batters scored very fast and both sides posted huge totals. The pitch hardly deteriorated during the course of the match.

"Since there was very little in it for the bowlers, I found the pitch to be 'below average' as per the ICC guidelines."

Match referees provide ratings on the performance of pitches for all Tests, one-day internationals and T20Is.

Officials have six categories available to them: very good, good, average, below average, poor or unfit. Penalties are available if surfaces fall into the latter three.

Rawalpindi now has two demerit points against its name. Should any pitch accrue five over a five-year span then it can face a suspension from hosting international cricket for 12 months.
