Canterbury batsman Leo Carter has become the seventh cricketer to his six consecutive sixes in an over in a top-level professional match after doing so in New Zealand’s Super Smash on Sunday.

The 25-year-old dispatched the left-arm spin of Anton Devcich over the legside for 36 runs in an onslaught that saw Northern Districts’ total of 219 chased down with more than an over to spare.

Only Sir Garfield Sobers, Ravi Shastri, Herschelle Gibbs, Yuvraj Singh, Ross Whiteley and Hazratullah Zazai have previously achieved the feat in competitive matches, with Carter just the third to do so in a domestic T20 game and the first New Zealander.

In his 25 T20 games previously, he had never passed 35 and had hit just eight sixes.

“Basically just stepped across and swung as hard as I could,” he said of his strategy – before Devcich’s over, Canterbury had required 64 runs from just 30 deliveries.

“I'm not so sure I got many off the middle, but pretty short boundary there, so they just carried over, I was pretty thankful for that.

“We needed a big over at that time, it was sort of my job to just try and take down that end and I was lucky enough to get a few over there, so it was good.”

Earlier, Tim Seifert had taken Blake Coburn for four consecutive sixes in Northern Districts’ innings.
