New Zealand captain Kane Williamson out of first two ODIs against India

The skipper has suffered a shoulder problem and his fitness will be managed over the coming days to ensure he is in contention for the end of the series

Kane Williamson will miss the first two one-day internationals against India as the New Zealand captain attempts to shake-off a shoulder problem.

The 29-year-old suffered an inflamed AC joint in his left shoulder during the third T20 against the tourists.

Williamson did not feature in either of the final two matches of the series and it has now been revealed that his spell on the sidelines will be extended.

Already ruled out of the 50-over games in Hamilton and Auckland on February 5 and 8, he will be monitored over the coming days with a view to him returning for the third ODI at Bay Oval on February 11.

If unable to feature, Williamson will then be targetting the start of the two-Test series, which begins on February 20 in Wellington.

"Kane has had an X-ray scan which cleared him of anything serious, but it's best for his recovery that he avoids aggravating the joint for the next few days," said physiotherapist Vijay Vallabh.

"He will continue his fitness training sessions throughout the week and will start batting again on Friday with the prospect of being available for game three next Tuesday."

Mark Chapman will replace Williamson for the start of the series, with Tom Latham taking over as captain.

India, who won the T20 series 5-0 thanks to successive super over victories, are already without Rohit Sharma for the entire ODI series due to a calf injury suffered in the fifth T20.
