Yorkshire sign Middlesex and England batsman Dawid Malan

The 32-year-old leaves Middlesex with 9,887 first-class runs from 163 appearances, including 23 centuries and thousand-run seasons in 2010, 2014 and 2019

Yorkshire have announced the signing of England batsman Dawid Malan on a four-year contract.

Malan, who made 399 appearances for Middlesex after debuting aged 18 in the 2006 Twenty20 Cup, had previously announced his resignation as the club's captain after two seasons at the end of September, following a frustrating campaign that saw the county win just three red-ball matches and miss out on County Championship promotion.

The 32-year-old leaves Middlesex with 9,887 first-class runs from 163 appearances, including 23 centuries and thousand-run seasons in 2010, 2014 and 2019.

"I have had 13 happy and successful seasons with Middlesex, and I will always be grateful to the staff, players and supporters for their encouragement over the years," he said.

"However, this feels like the right time to embrace a new challenge and I am excited by the prospect of joining Yorkshire, one of the great county clubs in English cricket.

"I am looking forward to moving to Leeds, and starting a new chapter of my career."

His domestic performances earned him an international debut against South Africa in 2017, with his maiden Test century at the WACA a rare highlight of England's ill-fated Ashes tour the following winter.

A strong 2019 domestic campaign brought Malan back into contention for the national side, passing 1,000 County Championship runs with a season-ending innings of 72 against Derbyshire at Lord's, and only the Somerset pair of Babar Azam and Tom Banton accrued more than his tally of 490 runs in the T20 Blast, which came at a strike rate of 148.

In October, Malan was a late pick by Trent Rockets in The Hundred draft, and will line up alongside Rashid Khan and England captain Joe Root for the Nottingham-based side. He has also represented a variety of domestic T20 sides, most recently including Cape Town Blitz, Khulna Titans and Peshalwar Zalmi.

Malan then made his first appearance for England's T20 side in over 18 months against New Zealand in Christchurch in the first of five T20 internationals, scoring 11 from 13 balls opening alongside Jonny Bairstow. He followed that up with a knock of 39 as the tourists were defeated by the Kiwis in the second T20I in Wellington.

Andrew Gale, the Yorkshire coach, added: "It is a fantastic signing for us. As soon as we realised that Dawid had the potential to leave Middlesex, he was a player that we always wanted to speak to. He fits the mould of what we are looking for.

"It is fair to say that we have lacked consistency with the bat for a number of years. We have looked at bringing people in for a while, but it had to fit the right mould for us.

"We needed somebody with experience and Dawid has got Test experience. Not so long ago, we were watching him score runs for England in the Ashes.

"Hopefully, with his experience, it will give us a bit more consistency with the bat."
