Ashton Agar was left bloodied and in need of medical attention after an attempt to dismiss his brother went wrong during a Marsh One-Day Cup game in Australia.

The allrounder, playing for Western Australia against sibling Wes's South Australia at the Karen Rolton Oval, suffered a laceration to his nose after slipping as he went for a catch at mid-on.

Instead of taking the routine chance, Agar was struck between the eyes, with the force of the impact knocking off his sunglasses and hat.

Agar left the field of play holding a towel to his head and did not feature in the remainder of the match, which was won by Western Australia by six runs.

"He slipped over and the ball hit his glasses and the glasses split him open," Wes Agar, who had rushed to his brother's aid in the immediate aftermath of the incident, said.

"The doctor wanted to stitch him up, but he just got engaged so he said he'll leave it to a plastic surgeon.

"I was pretty rattled ... It looked really bad. I was just worrying about his health. I wasn't thinking about anything else, I just ran out of my crease to go see him.

"I didn't feel great, but thankfully he's okay."
