Until 2017, Blundell would've been given out handled the ball; however, a law change has since brought handled the ball into the same category as obstructing the field
New Zealand and Wellington batsman Tom Blundell was given out obstructing the field - one of the rarest modes of dismissal in cricket.
During the second over of the final day in Wellington's Plunket Shield match against Otago, Blundell, who was on 101 at the time, played a short ball from Jacob Duffy into his crease. Perfectly within the laws of the game, the 30-year-old attempted to kick the ball away.
His boot failed to make contact with the ball, so instead he tapped it with his glove. Nearby fielders appealed and he was given out. Until 2017, Blundell would've been given out handled the ball; however, a law change has since brought handled the ball into the same category as obstructing the field.
Wellington lost the match at Basin Reserve by 84 runs after being bowled out for 194 in pursuit of 279.
Blundell is expected to feature in New Zealand's upcoming series against West Indies. He replaced Jeet Raval as opener for the Boxing Day Test in 2019 and scored his second Test century - notching 121 in the second innings. His first Test century came in 2017 against West Indies.
