Sri Lanka's Akila Dananjaya cleared to resume bowling after ICC assessment

The 27-year-old was first barred in August 2019 and banned for a year, but has been permitted to resume by cricket's authorities

Akila Dananjaya is free to return to bowling in international cricket after the Sri Lanka allrounder's action was cleared by the ICC.

The 27-year-old was banned for 12 months by cricket's world governing body in August 2019 after being reported during the first Test against New Zealand in Galle.

Since the suspension expired, an ICC panel has consulted video footage of Dananjaya's new action with an in-person assessment not permitted due to Covid-19 restrictions.

And they have concluded that Dananjaya is now in line with the regulations, which permits a 15-degree elbow extension limit.

Dananjaya is, therefore, free to resume bowling for Sri Lanka though it remains to be seen when his next outing will come.

Since being banned he has not played for Sri Lanka, only featuring in domestic first-class and T20 matches, including in the Lanka Premier League. He has not been selected for the upcoming Tests against England.

With the ban having been exclusively for international matches, he has been free to bowl for Colts CC and Galle Gladiators.
