Scotland seamer Josh Davey has signed a new contract extension with Somerset that will keep him with the county until the end of 2022.

The 29-year-old still had one year remaining on his previous agreement, however the Taunton side has moved to secure his services after a season in which he claimed 14 wickets during their victorious One-Day Cup campaign.

"I'm delighted. I've really made a home down here in the south-west and hopefully there will be some more successful years ahead," Davey said.

"It feels like a long time ago that I was given the opportunity to train and then play here at Somerset. It's been really enjoyable and winning the [One-Day Cup] trophy at Lord's last year was definitely one of the highlights of my career.

"I try to be as consistent as possible and compliment the attack. We've got some extremely talented bowlers in our group and competition for places is tough, but that drives the standards up.

"It was great to bring a trophy home last year and hopefully we can be challenging on all three fronts in 2020. Given the talent that we have in the squad, success won’t be too far away."

Aberdeen-born Davey had played stints at Middlesex and Hampshire before joining Somerset in 2014, and his patience was rewarded in 2018 as he began to establish a place in the club's first-choice side.

Since the start of that season he has picked up 51 wickets in 16 County Championship matches, including a career-best 5-21 in the second innings of the county's win over Yorkshire in September.

Davey has since helped Scotland confirm their place at next year's T20 World Cup, taking 10 wickets during October's Qualifier tournament in the United Arab Emirates.

Andy Hurry, Somerset's director of cricket, added: "We're really pleased that Josh has signed a new deal. He has been one of our most consistent performers over the last few seasons.

"He has worked hard, evolved and developed into an extremely important player for us. I have no doubt that he will continue to make significant contributions for the club over the next few years and continue to develop to become a force across all formats of the game."
