Quinton de Kock has been installed as South Africa's one-day international captain in place of Faf du Plessis, who has been dropped for the upcoming series against England.

Du Plessis' position as leader of the 50-over side has been uncertain since The Proteas limped out of the World Cup, but Cricket South Africa have removed him from action completely.

His role as Test skipper is also under the microscope after South Africa slipped 2-1 behind in the series against England after defeat in Port Elizabeth.

De Kock has twice led the Rainbow Nation in ODIs, both against Sri Lanka in 2018, and will assume the role starting with the three matches against England from on February 4.

"We all know the quality of the player that Quinton de Kock has grown to become," said Cricket South Africa's interim director of cricket Graeme Smith.

"Over the years, we have watched him grow in confidence and become one of the top ODI wicket-keeper batsmen in the world.

Kagiso Rabada breaks silence on fourth Test ban: "I'm letting the team down and myself"

"He has a unique outlook and manner in which he goes about his business and is tactically very street smart. We are confident that the new leadership role will bring out the best in him as a cricketer."

Elsewhere, five uncapped players have been named in South Africa's squad for the series, with Lutho Sipamla, Kyle Verreynne, Sisanda Magala, Janneman Malan and Bjorn Fortuin.

In the 15-man group there are just six survivors from the squad which performed dismally at the World Cup.

De Kock, Rassie van der Dussen, David Miller, Andile Phehlukwayo, Lungi Ngidi and Tabraiz Shamsi are retained but it is a much-changed set-up.

As well as Du Plessis, Kagiso Rabada, Chris Morris, Dale Steyn and Dwaine Pretorius have all been overlooked, as has Anrich Nortje.

JP Duminy, Hashim Amla and Imran Tahir have each retired from international cricket since the tournament, while Aiden Markram is nursing a fractured finger which he suffered during the first Test against England at Centurion.

South Africa squad: Quinton de Kock, Reeza Hendricks, Temba Bavuma, Rassie van der Dussen, David Miller, Jon Jon Smuts, Andile Phehlukwayo, Lutho Sipamla, Lungi Ngidi, Tabraiz Shamsi, Sisanda Magala, Bjorn Fortuin, Beuran Hendricks, Janneman Malan, Kyle Verreynne
