ENGLAND

Jason Roy (32): Was dropped on nought and looked off his best early on. Started to get into a rhythm then extra bounce caused him to plink one to cover off Kane Richardson. 6

Jonny Bairstow (12): Fell cheaply on the attack. Decent as ever in the field, taking a fine catch to send Warner on his way. 5

James Vince (64): Marshalled the innings intelligently before sending a late cut to Nathan Lyon inside the circle. 7.5

Ben Stokes (0-45 & 20): No wickets and didn’t really get on top of Australia’s attack. 5

Jos Buttler (52): The stand-in skipper produced a typically-brilliant cameo full of ridiculous shots, striking a 30-ball fifty before falling to the very next delivery. 7.5

Moeen Ali (0-54 & 22): With so many talents in the side, Moeen goes under the radar a little but he, alongside Adil Rashid, will be vital for England over the next seven weeks. Perished looking to get the chase done quickly. 5.5

Chris Woakes: Playing purely as a batsman the Warwickshire allrounder showed his calmness and class with the blade but couldn't finish the job. 6

Liam Dawson (1-50): Beat Khawaja to pick up a wicket on his home ground. A handy squad player for this England side. 6

Tom Curran (1-54): Brought Smith’s knock to an end. Has got himself in the squad and is pushing for a place in the starting XI. 6

Liam Plunkett (4-69): There were periods of inconsistency from Plunkett but he still ended up with four wickets to his name. Produced some power hitting alongisde Woakes. 7

Mark Wood (1-19): Opened with a maiden to David Warner. Any bowler who can do that is going to be of great use in white-ball cricket. His line was inconsistent however, before eventually going off with a niggle. Hopefully, for England, just as a precaution. 5

Smith struck the only hundred of the match

AUSTRALIA

Aaron Finch (14): A tame way to go for the skipper, just clipping Mark Wood to Moeen Ali at mid-on. 4

David Warner (43): 43 off 55 not the Warner we know. Definitely not the Warner who destroyed the IPL this year. Looked to break loose and fell to a good take from Baristow. 6.5

Shaun Marsh (30): Gloved a Plunkett slower ball through to the keeper. 6

Usman Khawaja (31): A real talent. Could easily open but came in lower down the order today. Swept nicely against the spin but eventually fell looking to charge Dawson.

Steve Smith (116): Picked his gaps and did not look ring rusty. Australia will be encouraged by his day’s work with the bat. Dropped a sitter off Behrendorff. 8.5

Marcus Stoinis (13 & 1-31): A mix up with Steve Smith saw his innings brought to an early conclusion. Bowled the 48th over which brought a wicket and went for just three runs. Took the final over and had Plunkett with his first ball. 6.5

Alex Carey (30): Carey's cameo showed promise, displaying attacking intent at the back-end of the innings. Missed a stumping chance off Lyon which would have had Vince on 53. 6

Nathan Coulter-Nile (1 & 1-61): Got the wicket of Buttler but not before receiving a first-hand lesson of the batsman's talents. One chastening over went for 24. 4

Jason Behrendorff (4* & 2-43): Four dots to open which should have been followed by the wicket of Roy but the skipper shelled it at slip. Produced some decent nuts and picked up the wickets of Bairstow and Vince. 7.5

Kane Richardson (2-51): Produced a cross-seam delivery which found extra bounce to catch Roy by surprise. Picked off Curran as England were looking to ease home. Took the penultimate over and conceded just six. 7

Adam Zampa (1 & 1-54): Just the wicket of Moeen to his name. Not as economical as Nathan Lyon but kept it relatively tight. 6

Nathan Lyon (1-37): A very tidy 10-over spell from the experienced spinner. Will be charged with tying teams up in the World Cup. 7.5
