NICK HOWSON assesses the performances of England and India's players after a pulsating second Test at the Home of Cricket
Rory Burns (49 & 0): Looked neat and tidy until Shami got one to jag back and trap him in front. Didn't have much hope with his day five dismissal. Top-order far from solved. 6
Dom Sibley (11 & 0): How much longer can he survive? Not just a question of every innings the Warwickshire man begins, but now one of his place in this line-up. Zak Crawley will surely return. 2
Haseeb Hameed (0 & 9): Looked a bag of nerves on his Test return. Missed a straight one from Siraj first up and though he looked keen the second time around, he eventually succumbed. 2
Joe Root (180* & 33): Recorded his fifth Test century of the year as the records continue to tumble. But the match will be defined as much by his captaincy on the last morning, as his exploits with the bat. 7.5
Jonny Bairstow (57 & 2): Very poor dismissal after showing real class in the first innings. Absorbed deliveries trying to save the game but got out in familiar fashion. How fit is Ollie Pope? 6
Jos Buttler (23 & 25): Once again was never able to play his natural game. On day five he showed great heart, playing within himself but his dismissal signalled the end. 5
Moeen Ali (27 & 13; 1-53 & 2-84): Such a joy to watch Moeen back with the red-ball. Grabbed key wickets on the fourth evening to burst the match open. Both dismissals with the bat were big moments, but he showed glimpses. 6
Sam Curran (0 & 0; 0-72 & 1-42): Even amid England's obvious injury problems, his place is under threat. Took his first and only wicket of the series to dismiss Kohli (he makes things happen) but lacked control. Recorded first Test king pair at Lord's. Craig Overton or Saqib Mahmood? 2
Ollie Robinson (6 & 9; 2-73 & 2-45): Looks very at home at this level and bowled with particular precision in the second innings with a combination of slower balls. Likely to remain for Headingley. Got into India on the fifth evening. 6
Mark Wood (5 & 0*; 2-91 & 3-51): No surprises from the Durham quick: pace, heart and results every single time he took the ball. Even with a shoulder injury, he continued to throw everything at India. We don't deserve him. 7
James Anderson (0 & 0; 5-52 & 0-53): Test five-for No.31 for the Lancastrian, who bowled with real intelligence and skill even when conditions weren't always in his favour. Looked a bit drained second time around. 7
Joe Root was England main, and only, man with the bat
Rohit Sharma (83 & 21): Was at his majestic best during the first innings but was bounced out in a rather predictable fashion as India gave England a foothold. 7
KL Rahul (129 & 5): A wonderfully dogged knock amid horrid conditions on the opening day proving it is possible to play with patience even as a predominantly white-ball player. Has impressed after being dropped into the top two. 8.5
Cheteshwar Pujara (9 & 45): A much-improved second innings knock, returning to his resolute approach which brought him 12 from his first 100 deliveries. Took an inspired Wood to break his resolve. 6
Virat Kohli (42 & 20): Going through one of the most barren periods in his Test career. Both dismissals felt like key moments in the Test. He led from the front on day five, with his aggressive captaincy proving critical. 7
Ajinkya Rahane (1 & 61): A second innings knock against the script as the hosts chased wickets to set up a run chase. Played with great discipline. 7
Rishabh Pant (37 & 22): Pant's great desire to attack and play naturally didn't come off at the home of cricket. But he'll be back. 5
Is Dom Sibley on borrowed time?
Ravindra Jadeja (40 & 3; 0-43 & 0-5): Batted admirably with the tail to put on some key runs in the first innings. Done like a kipper by Moeen in the second. 6
Mohammed Shami (0 & 56*; 2-95 & 1-13): A performance that will be remembered for an innings with the bat that laid the platform for victory. His second Test fifty was inspired and aside from his three wickets, was a mountainous performance in the context of the game. 7
Ishant Sharma (8 & 16; 3-69 & 2-15): Backed up some of his quicker, more skilful teammates with consistency, movement off the seam and a bit of swing. What a guy to have around. 7
Jasprit Bumrah (0 & 34; 0-79 & 3-33): After an absurd display on the third evening while overstepping, this was Bumrah at his best on day five. The off-cutter that got Robinson was a world-class delivery, as was the one that got Root. 7
Mohammed Siraj (0* & DNB; 4-94 & 4-32): Eight wickets on his Lord's debut, twice being on a hat-trick and claiming the winning scalps with just a handful of balls remaining. It was nearly perfect from this brash 27-year-old. 8

I completely agree with Ramsay Caffull. Kohli appeared to have appointed himself umpire on the 4th evening with his over the top antics resulting in play ceasing for 'bad light'. Where floodlights are fully operational there can't be any justification for stopping play. What's the point of having them if the benefit they give is ignored???

Bumrah -2 points for the deliberate no balls on the Saturday?

Beaten by a much better team - but we haven't really got a team have we - a couple of very good players, but mostly very poor. One Indian who I despise is Virat Kohli. Egotistical, nasty, cynical, unsportsmanlike!

We should pick some of the performers from county cricket for test cricket - it is what it is for? So step forward Carlsson, Critchley and so on.

After defeat at Lords England must clear out the top order and start again at Headingley.Burns,Sibley must be replaced Malan and Pope to come in Hameed will have to open .Curran needs to step down and an appeal made to Ben Stokes to save us before the series has gone.
