Seamer Toby Pettman has joined Nottinghamshire on a one-day deal.

The 22-year-old has previously made seven first-class appearances for Oxford University and Oxford MCCU.

Across those outings, he took 33 wickets and scored 122 runs.

Having graduated with a first class honours degree in Classics, Pettman is now looking to fully focus on his cricket career for at least 12 months.

"It’s enormously exciting," said Pettman. "I’m eager to see how far I can go.

"To have the opportunity to commit 100% to cricket is something I’ve not been able to do previously in my life.

"Obviously it would be great to challenge for a first-team spot during the season, but I know there is a lot of hard work ahead of me to get to that stage."

Assistant coach Kevin Shine, who talent-spotted Pettman during a trial at Loughborough University, said: "We’re looking to make the most of his accuracy, height, bounce and lateral movement, and we will see where it goes from there.

"It’s an exciting signing because we’ve found him a little later and we’ve backed that up with a thorough approach."

Well done, Toby, a Dark Blue through and through. Will you be the last to gain a first class honours degree (certainly in Classics) and try and play first class cricket? Shame on the ECB for effectively ending the MCC Universities programme, which has produced lots of good county cricketers, who were also able to get degrees, Of course we wait to see what will emerge. But with no money because of Covid it is easy to see the Universities programme withering. What a shame and how short sighted!
