Mitch Marsh reflects on freak injury: "It's pretty uncharacteristic of me to punch a wall"

Mitch Marsh intends to learn from the experience after he broke his hand punching a wall in a fit of frustration, ruling himself out of action for as long as six weeks.

He will now miss the start of the Test summer - Pakistan arrive in the country for a series which is due to begin on November 21.

“I think when you get out in cricket, sometimes your emotions can get the better of you,” Marsh said. “It’s pretty uncharacteristic of me to punch a wall, I’m a pretty easy-going sort of bloke.

“As a captain you want to stand up for your team in times where on a day four wicket, I wanted to make sure I was there for as long as I possibly could be.

“I obviously understand that my actions come with consequences.

“It certainly will be an isolated incident... it’s a good lesson for me.

“You can’t be punching walls.”

Marsh had been an outside chance for the Aussie Test team, having impressed in the final Ashes match at The Oval in September.

Instead, he will be left to run the drinks for his state, though he has at least been told he will not need surgery on his injured hand.

“(Australian coach Justin Langer) just told me I’m an idiot,” Marsh said. “He was disappointed for me. Basically once I sat down and realised what I’d done, I realised that I was in a fair bit of pain.

“I had my glove on, probably lucky I did or I’d be out for a lot longer I think.”
