Glamorgan have opted to retain Matthew Maynard as head coach on a three-year deal.

The 53-year-old spent the 2019 season as coach on an interim basis, having returned as batting consultant in 2017.

Maynard, who served 20 years as a player in South Wales, had led Glamorgan between 2008 and 2010 before an acrimonious departure.

The intervening period had seen him have spells as Somerset director of cricket, with Nashua Titans in South Africa and St Lucia Zouks in the Caribbean.

Last season, Glamorgan narrowly missed out on promotion from Division Two, achieving a fourth-place finish, but finished bottom of the T20 Blast south group and sixth in their One-Day Cup section.

“It’s very exciting to be able to carry on the work we started this year," said Maynard, who played four Tests and 14 one-day internationals for England.

THE GOOGLY: County Championship may have to be put down before it suffers any further indignity

“I love being a part of this club and I have enjoyed working with the players and coaching staff throughout the season.

“There is lots of talent within the squad and we have a good mix of young players and experienced heads."

Director of cricket Mark Wallace added: “We are delighted to have secured Matt as our permanent head coach.

“After conducting a thorough review of the season with players, coaches and staff it became apparent Matt should continue his role as head coach.

“Matt is a highly experienced head coach who has developed his skills around the world and possesses an intimate knowledge of the club and how we are structured."
