A statement from Cricket Scotland also revealed that no matches - friendly or competitive - will take place before August 1
No league cricket or national cup competitions will take place in Scotland this season, it has been announced.
The news follows a virtual meeting between the national governing body, officials associations and regional associations, which run local and league cricket competitions in Scotland.
Intentions regarding regional cup competitions will be revealed separately. It is hoped that some matches could be played in August, with friendly and potentially competitive fixtures – likely to be T20 games – being arranged through consultation between regional associations and clubs. That, however, would depend as well on availability of players, officials and venues.
Gus Mackay, chief executive of Cricket Scotland, said: “We very much understand that those involved in the game will be disappointed that there will be no league cricket this year and the decision has been made with a heavy heart.
“However, in all the circumstances, we believe this decision brings the necessary clarity for the game in Scotland while seeking to provide, when we can, some form of cricket in 2020, working within the Scottish Government’s guidelines.
“These plans are subject to review as further information and guidance becomes available. Further announcements will be made as appropriate.”
Cricket Scotland also revealed that the potential start of all domestic cricket activity is being pushed back to July 1 from the previous June 1 date in light of the coronavirus pandemic, meaning that it is anticipated that no domestic matches – friendly or competitive – will take place prior to the beginning of August.
It takes into consideration the recent Scottish Government announcement on the extension of lockdown until at least May 28, as well as current guidance on a likely exit strategy.
“The health and welfare of all those involved with cricket, as well as the protection of essential services, remain, as always, the prime considerations in any decisions,” a statement read. “The gap between July 1 and August 1 gives time for players to prepare for cricket, for grounds to be made ready and for any necessary protocols to be put in place.”
Cricket Scotland expects to make announcements in the next two weeks about the international matches currently scheduled in June and July against New Zealand, Australia, Nepal and Namibia.
