Kings XI Punjab have been renamed Punjab Kings in time for this year's 14th edition of the Indian Premier League.

The Mohali-based franchise had been known by their former name since being founded in 2008.

Co-owner Mohit Burman is understood to be behind the change in direction, which includes a fresh logo to complete the rebrand.

"We are much more than a team, but a family which has come together and built a connection with our fans through our relentless hard work," a statement to announce the news read.

"The new brand logo and name are an extension to our undying spirit of fighting against all odds and celebrating the true spirit of Punjab."

Confirmation of the moves comes in the week of the IPL auction. Punjab Kings have a nine total slots to fill and can acquire an additional five overseas players.

Of the sides currently competing in the IPL, Kings are among just three who have never won the competition.

In 13 outings they have only twice qualified for the play-offs. In 2014 they finished top of the group stage and progressed to the final where they lost to Kolkata Knight Riders.
