England seamer Jofra Archer will miss the tour of Sri Lanka and the 2020 Indian Premier League through injury.

Archer has been diagnosed with a low-grade stress fracture of his right elbow, forcing him out of selection contention.

He had struggled with an elbow problem since the first Test match against South Africa at Centurion, sat out the second and third, and appeared to be set to play a part in the fourth at Johannesburg before breaking down in the warm-up prior to the start of the first day's play.

Archer underwent scans on the trouble joint in the UK on Wednesday, which revealed the stress fracture.

The electrifying quick only made his international debut in May - against Ireland in a one-day international in Malahide - but ended the year having bowled more overs for his country than any other England player.

Jofra Archer is out of the IPL and England's trip to Sri Lanka

Archer's 400.5 overs was 33 more than his nearest teammate, Stuart Broad, who contributed 367.4 over the course of the 12-month period. Ben Stokes was third on the list, with 336.2.

England play Sri Lanka in two Tests in Colombo and Galle in March, while Archer would have been a prominent part of Rajasthan Royals' IPL campaign.

There is a possibility the seamer may not be fit in time for the start of the county season, which begins over the Easter weekend.

The England camp said in a statement that Archer will focus on returning to full fitness in time for the Test summer.

West Indies begin a three-Test tour in early June.
