India have suffered a major blow ahead of the first Test against Australia with news that Privthi Shaw will miss the game through injury.

Shaw, the precocious teenage talent who wowed India fans with a century on debut against West Indies last month, rolled his ankle during a warm-up match against a Cricket Australia XI in Sydney on Friday.

The batsman sustained the injury while attempting to take a catch on the SCG boundary and was immediately withdrawn from the game.

He was sent for scans which revealed a lateral ligament problem in his left ankle and has subsequently been ruled out of the opening meeting with Aussies at the Adelaide Oval, which is due to begin on December 16.

A BCCI statement read: "Shaw will be unavailable for the First Test against Australia in Adelaide.

"He will undergo an intensive rehabilitation program to hasten the recovery and be available for selection at the earliest."

The second match of the series is scheduled to take place at the Optus Stadium in Perth from December 14.
