England's T20 vice-captain, Sam Billings has been banned from using his recycled, eco-friendly Gray-Nicolls gloves.

Ahead of the series opener, match referee Andy Pycroft informed the wicketkeeper-batsman that the multicoloured mitts were deemed illegal by ICC standards.

Regulations require that 50 percent or more of gloves in white-ball internationals ‘must be white, or the same colour as the base colour of the relevant team’s playing shirt’.

Billings’ gloves are comprised of lucid green, purple, blue, orange and silver materials.

The Kent man donned the gloves in the two warm-up matches which preceded the five-match contest but was forced to send for a white pair in Christchurch in order to comply with ICC regulations.

Billings registered scores of 27 and 28 in the two warm-up fixtures at Lincoln before hitting an unbeaten 14 in England’s seven-wicket win at Hagley Oval on Friday.

The second match of the series takes place at the Westpac Stadium in Wellington, starting at 1am GMT on Sunday.
