Scorecard

ENGLAND

Jason Roy (3): Looked horribly short of form and though Josh Hazlewood produced a fine catch, it was an ugly shot. 2

Jonny Bairstow (84): Showed so much character during his knock and had England dreaming temporarily until he was superbly caught by Hazlewood. 8

Joe Root (1): A jarring innings to watch, a bit like some of his from last summer's Ashes. He toiled away before the inevitable edge behind. 2

Eoin Morgan (23): Read conditions well but his team didn't execute. A key wicket when he found Glenn Maxwell. Must rouse his team again. 4

Jos Buttler (1): England hopes came and went with the wicket-keeper's dismissal when he horribly mistimed off Adam Zampa. 2

Sam Billings (118): Many would tell you this kind of knock has been coming for Billings, who backed up his showings from earlier in the summer. Just couldn't guide England all the way, but emerges with lots of credit. 8

Moeen Ali (0-59 & 6): Didn't offer a whole lot of threat and he was nudged and nurdled away with few alarms as Australia rebuilt. Without Stokes, England lack a fifth bowler for the middle overs though he could still come good in the sub-continent World Cups. 5

Chris Woakes (1-59 & 10): Back after a break from the T20s and didn't quite enjoy the new-ball success England have become accustomed to. Got a wicket in his final over which his perseverance deserved, but Australia preferred him to pace on the ball. 6

Adil Rashid (2-55 & 5): Australia played him as well as they have all summer but he still picked up a couple of wickets and kept the damage down. Maxwell hit him for a pair of sixes but overall he gave England some control in the middle-overs. 6

Jofra Archer (3-57 & 8*): His first 50-over outing for England since bowling the final ball of the super and Archer flew out the traps. Produced a beauty to get David Warner and when Maxwell started to go big, changed pace to win the duel. 7

Mark Wood (3-54 & DNB): Will take pride in out-bowling pace-partner Archer and he found success when Australia relaxed after the new ball went soft. A great option to have at third change and picked up three key wickets as a result. 7

AUSTRALIA

David Warner (6): Dismissed by Archer for a sixth time, but there was little he could have done. His up and down tour continues. 3

Aaron Finch (16): Displayed little foot movement, trapped by Wood's pace and could only offer a regulation edge. 4

Marcus Stoinis (43 & 0-15): Never felt as though he lost control, as his T20 knocks often suggested. A vital effort in the circumstances as England started well. 6

Marnus Labuschagne (21): A tame dismissal as he misread Rashid, playing a nothing shot to the googly. Made up for it with a cracking catch to dismiss Buttler. 4

Mitchell Marsh (73 & 1-29): Quelled Rashid with some nimble footwork and clever cricket shots. Didn't overcomplicate things and the positive result followed. 7

Alex Carey (10): A strange innings which started with a reverse sweep and ended with a regulation one which looped upwards. Thanks for coming. 3

Glenn Maxwell (77 & 0-19): One of the few batsmen to look assured against Rashid and after a slow start soon put the hammer down with four maximums over deep mid-wicket. Couldn't influence with the ball. 7

Pat Cummins (9 & 1-74): Initially brought his Test-match accuracy with the white-ball, hitting his lengths to bog England down during the opening exchanges. Lost his way a little as the reply progressed but was super at the death to secure victory. 5

Mitchell Starc (19* & 0-47): Produced his best opening spell of the tour, finally combining pace and accuracy on a consistent basis. Returned to the attack with a leg injury that nearly threatened victory but came good at the end. 6

Adam Zampa (5 & 4-55): Against the backdrop of some superb seam bowling, Zampa took wickets at key intervals during a classy display. Seduced the hosts' batsmen into ambitious shots with subtle changes in length and flight, and they fell into the trap. 8

Josh Hazlewood (0* & 3-26): What damage this man could have done had he been fit for the World Cup. Bowled with unbelievable discipline to put England firmly on the back-foot, kicking things off with a fine caught and bowled. Then took a beauty to get rid of Bairstow 8
