Smith, who captained his country in 109 Tests, is said to have been interviewed by a five-person panel which included CEO Thabang Moroe
Reports are suggesting that Graeme Smith is one of the candidates in the running to become South Africa’s first full-time director of cricket.
ESPN Cricinfo reported that the former captain has told their sources he has been formally interviewed for the position.
It is understood that Corrie van Zyl, who was suspended as interim director of cricket last month, and former selector Hussein Manack have also been interviewed for the role with the position expected to be confirmed in the next fortnight.
Faf du Plessis: Kolpak system hurting South African cricket
Smith, who represented South Africa in 117 Tests, captaining the side in 109 of them and amassing 9,265 runs in the process, is said to have been interviewed by a five-person panel which included CEO Thabang Moroe.
It appears no overseas candidates were interviewed for the role. When the new director of cricket is in place it is expected that a ‘national team director’ will also be appointed - a role held by Enoch Nkwe during South Africa’s tour of India.
