The family of former India international Jacob Martin has made a public plea for donations to help pay for the 46-year-old's medical bills as he continues to fight for his life.

Martin, who made 10 one-day international appearances for his country between 1999 and 2001, was involved in a road traffic incident on December 28 and has been on live support in Vadodara hospital since.

The BCCI has contributed 5 lakhs (£5,450) to the fundraising appeal, while the Baroda Cricket Association has also made a donation but with costs rising that has not been enough to cover the bills. Martin is currently on a ventilator and suffered injuries to his lungs and liver, local reports said.

"Once I came to know about the accident I tried to help Jacob's family in every possible way," Sanjay Patel, the former BCCI and BCA secretary, was quoted as saying by the Telegraph in Kolkata.

"I have spoken to a few well wishers, including Samarjitsinh Gaekwad (member of the former ruling family of Baroda and former BCA president) who donated Rs 1 lakh, and accumulated around Rs 5 lakh for his treatment.

"The hospital bills have already crossed Rs 11 lakh, and at one point, the hospital had even stopped providing medicine. The BCCI deposited the amount directly and the treatment hasn't been affected thereafter."
