Somerset have announced the appointment of Gordon Baird as the county's new chairman.

Baird, who had previously served as managing director of sporting goods companies Dunlop Slazenger and Adidas before stepping down from executive roles at the start of 2016,will assume duties from interim chairman Richard Brice following the club's annual general meeting in January.

The county had been seeking a successor to Charles Clark, who passed away in June after serving 18 months in the role of chair and a further decade as a board member.

Upon the announcement, Baird commented: "I am delighted to be given the opportunity to become chairman at such an exciting time in the club's development.

"I do however regret that this opportunity has come about because of the sad passing of Charles Clark and add my condolences to those already expressed.

"Last season's on-field success – particularly winning the One-Day Cup and coming so close to replicating this in the Championship – provides a fantastic platform to take the club forward, both on and off the field.

"I look forward to working with the board, executive teams and members to optimise the club's position in a rapidly changing cricket environment and in moving forward our existing strategy, governance and commercial initiatives."

Chris Bishop, who chaired the nominations committee, added: "Throughout the interview process Gordon clearly demonstrated his understanding of the opportunities and challenges facing cricket and in particular Somerset CCC.

"He also highlighted the important role that effective governance will play going forward and the need for leadership in delivering a clear strategic vision.

"He brings a clear brand and commercial focus, is used to working with a diverse range of stakeholders in challenging environments, and has a strong clear understanding of the need for sustainable financial performance."

Although we are told the reason Somerset’s financial target was understandably so high for the last financial year; we are not told the facts as to why the targets were not reached.
